About the Role

The State of Montana is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Curator to join our team. As a Senior Curator, you will be responsible for the care, preservation, and management of the State's art and artifact collections.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct historical research and analysis to inform exhibition development and implementation.
  • Develop and recommend special historical interpretation projects, including exhibitions, public programs, and educational initiatives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and produce in-house exhibitions, conduct tours of the collection, and present lectures and programs to the public and professional organizations.
  • Conduct historical research, including prehistory to the recent past, pertaining to the history of Montana and the region.
  • Advises and consults with colleagues regarding issues of historical authenticity of artifacts and traditional customs of a historical period.
  • Prepare articles for scholarly publications, professional papers, interpretive text for exhibits, newspaper articles, press releases, and compilations of interpretive materials that describe the past and trace historical developments pertaining to Montana and the region.
  • Organize and develop original interpretive themes, articulate exhibit messages, shape storylines, select artifacts for exhibits, and write interpretive text and identification labels for exhibits and exhibit publications.
  • Provide reference assistance to sister Montana institutions, and the public regarding enquiries about historical objects in the collection.
  • Assist and supervise researchers, MTHS Programs, and support organizations with issues and projects using the collection and Original Governor's Mansion.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in history, museum studies, or related field.
  • Minimum of two years of job-related experience.
  • Excellent historical research and analysis abilities.
  • Highly proficient in exhibit production techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective time management, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Takes initiative, applies problem-solving skills, and can multi-task.
  • Skilled at maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other state agencies, and the public.
  • Likes to work both independently and as a member of a team.
