Role Summary:
The Emergency Care Technician delivers direct patient support under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or designated healthcare professional, adhering to federal, state, and local regulations, as well as the policies and procedures of Bon Secours Mercy Health.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide fundamental patient care, including comfort measures, vital sign monitoring, personal hygiene assistance, mobility support, lab draws, ECGs, basic wound care, and other unit-specific tasks under RN direction.
- Conduct patient rounding as assigned.
- Offer 1:1 patient safety companion services as required.
- Act as a communication link between patients and nursing staff to relay changes and concerns.
- Deliver exceptional customer service to patients, families, community providers, visitors, and colleagues.
- Ensure accurate, timely documentation related to patient care.
- Participate in handoff reports, sharing pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs.
- Perform delegated tasks once competency has been established.
- Collect data within the scope of practice.
- Conduct patient screenings as necessary.
- Promote quality and safety by continuously seeking improvements in processes and systems to enhance patient care delivery.
- Demonstrate the ability to work autonomously, resolve conflicts, and manage stress effectively.
- Maintain familiarity with policies and procedures.
Education Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED (required)
Licensing & Certifications:
- BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, must be obtained from an approved source prior to direct patient care)
- Current certification as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Medical Assistant (preferred)
Experience:
- Prior experience as a Patient Care Technician, in a nursing support role, or relevant healthcare experience; second-year nursing students from an RN program are also preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
- Proficient in computer use
- Monitor patient conditions during treatment
- Communicate patient conditions and care to medical professionals
- Document patients' medical histories
- Maintain sterile fields
- Perform CPR and other emergency procedures
- Assist with patient positioning and transport
- Provide excellent customer service and patient care
- Conduct phlebotomy and EKGs
- Administer wound care and obtain vital signs
- Exhibit attention to detail and critical thinking
- Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork skills
- Resolve conflicts and build relationships with empathy
