Automotive Mechanic Assistant

The facilities department at Allan Hancock College is seeking applications to create a pool of qualified candidates for a short-term role as an automotive mechanic at the Santa Maria Campus.
Key Responsibilities and Qualifications- Conduct inspections on buses, cars, trucks, tractors, and various mechanical equipment utilized within the college;
- Identify and diagnose mechanical issues;
- Perform repairs including overhauling engines, transmissions, and differentials, fitting pistons and rings, relining and adjusting brakes, aligning wheels, installing axles, and overhauling steering gears and drive shafts;
- Execute additional mechanical and electrical repairs; repair fenders and other metal surfaces; conduct electric and acetylene welding;
- Service power lawnmowers and other mechanical equipment;
- Refuel and lubricate equipment; change and repair tires;
- Operate buses as required;
- Supervise and assess student bus drivers.
Familiarity with tools, equipment, and procedures for servicing, overhauling, repairing, and adjusting motor equipment, including fuel, ignition, electrical, cooling, and braking systems;
Understanding of methods and procedures for repairing, overhauling, and adjusting heavy-duty automatic transmissions;
Awareness of safety precautions and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Candidates who possess the experience, knowledge, and skills listed above are deemed to have the necessary education.
A minimum of one year of experience as an automotive mechanic at the journeyman level; experience with diesel engines is highly desirable.
Other Requirements:
A valid California Driver's License; ability to qualify for district vehicle insurance coverage.
Successful completion of the examination for school bus drivers administered by the California Highway Patrol;
First Aid Certification.
Work Schedule
Monday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Salary
Program Assistant IV Hourly Rate: $23.54
