Job Summary:

This position is responsible for assisting in the implementation of individual and group counseling programs within the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

The Counselor will work under general supervision to provide counseling services to inmates and support the overall mission of the department.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Processes intake data for new cases and arranges conference or group sessions.

2. Assists in the preparation of program files and individual histories.

3. Works with various related agencies in exchange of information, as required.

4. Leads group discussions to accommodate the needs of the group, as required.

5. Lectures to therapy or counseling groups and monitors discussions.

6. Utilizes recreational, physical education, and other therapeutic activities counseling aids, as required.

7. Prepares evaluations and reports, as required.

Requirements:

1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, sociology, criminal justice, or a related field.

2. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

3. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

The Counselor will be required to work in a jail-secured environment and must be available for shift and weekend work as required.
