KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Medical Support Specialist is responsible for assessing donor eligibility for plasma donation, managing donor adverse reactions, reviewing laboratory test outcomes, and notifying donors of any unsuitable test results. This role operates under the direct supervision of the Center Manager (or Assistant Manager as applicable) for operational guidance and under the supervision of the Center Physician for medical matters. Ideally, the Medical Support Specialist will be knowledgeable about the regulations governing the plasma collection industry and/or a manufacturing setting. The Medical Support Specialist adheres to directives from BioLife Medical Affairs and provides center-level support for environmental, health, and safety (EHS) initiatives.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Donor Eligibility Assessment (85%)
  • Accurately and promptly determine donor eligibility, including the management of informed consent, education on AIDS, confidential self-exclusion, medical history interviews, physical examinations, blood testing, and reviewing Serological Protein Electrophoresis (SPE) as necessary.
  • Evaluate and manage donor reactions occurring at the facility, following established SOPs for medical emergencies, including executing the Center Physician's standing orders and arranging donor transport to emergency care facilities.
  • Oversee donor deferrals; review test results and inform donors of unsuitable test outcomes in accordance with applicable SOPs.
  • Initiate and investigate Post Donation Information (PDI).
  • Consult with the Center Physician or Medical Affairs (as applicable) when addressing unacceptable findings to donors, problem-solving, or seeking guidance on medical or technical issues, including donor safety and eligibility.
  • Demonstrate ongoing competency in job responsibilities and complete periodic assessments with the Center Physician as per applicable SOPs.
  • Support EHS Program as Required (5%)
  • Conduct pre-placement evaluations of new hires, including assessment of medical history questionnaires.
  • Assist with Hepatitis B and Seasonal Flu vaccination programs for employees as applicable.
  • Maintain relevant employee medical records.
  • Participate in the EHS site committee and assist in employee training as needed.
  • Manage employee incidents and determine if further evaluation is necessary by occupational health/ER. Refer to EHS guidance regarding employee incidents.
  • Administer first aid to employees as needed.
  • Act as Pandemic Coordinator when authorized by EHS.
  • Support investigations related to pandemic threats within the local community as indicated by EHS or Medical Affairs.
  • Perform Duties in Medical History Area (10%)
  • Welcome donors as they enter and exit the donor floor.
  • Record donor pulse, blood pressure, and temperature measures, and monitor the electronic donor questionnaire system.
  • Conduct finger stick tests, collect samples, and record other donor metrics, including hematocrit, total protein, and weight.
Enter donor information into the Donor Information System (DIS).

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Essential: Graduate of a recognized educational program.

Desired:
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years in a clinical or hospital environment preferred.
