Job Summary

The Blood Bank Technologist plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe transfusion therapy of patients by accurately performing, interpreting, and documenting technical Blood Bank procedures. This position requires strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to work independently. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to quality and patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform and interpret routine Blood Bank tests, including ABO/Rh typing, direct and indirect antiglobulin tests, crossmatches, transfusion reaction workups, fetal screen, and Kleihauer-Betke stains.
  • Log in specimens, check patient computer files, prioritize and triage work, prepare and issue components, answer phones, and perform miscellaneous tasks.
  • Process and manipulate blood products, including rejuvenation, freezing, deglycerolizing, washing, pooling, and thawing, with corresponding paperwork.
  • Perform daily reagent quality control and participate in equipment quality control and preventative maintenance.
  • Identify antibodies using routine antibody panels and reference procedures, including enzyme use, synsorbs, absorptions/elutions, antibody titrations, antigen screening, and other specialized tests.
  • Perform irradiation of blood products and retype units received from other facilities, process, and input products into inventory.
Requirements
  • NYS Licensed or eligible for NYS licensure.
  • BSMT degree, or BS degree and one-year experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • ASCP certification.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.
Work Environment

The Blood Bank Technologist will work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as assigned, with on-call responsibilities. The ideal candidate will be able to work effectively in a team environment and maintain a high level of professionalism.
