Job Overview

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program designed for transitioning active-duty US military personnel.

The DoD SkillBridge Internships aim to assist transitioning military personnel in acquiring practical experience in the workforce during their final days of active-duty service.

The intern will engage in hands-on training on significant projects while collaborating closely with a mentor and senior leadership within the organization.

HII Mission Technologies (HII-MT) focuses on integrating transitioning military personnel into internships that leverage their Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSAs), Education, and Military Training relevant to their prior military roles; these positions are structured to facilitate a seamless transition to full-time employment with HII-MT.

Key Responsibilities


The SkillBridge intern will undertake training as a Splunk Administrator at HII-Mission Technologies, reporting to a designated HII Supervisor, with the objective of mastering Splunk fundamentals and Vulnerability Management.

The intern will be tasked with special projects as required.

Desired Outcomes (3-4 month target)


By the conclusion of the internship, the intern will have acquired foundational skills necessary to deploy Splunk for the Automated Enterprise Reporting System (AERS).

The intern will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Department of Defense (DoD) developmental and operational testing and assessment methodologies.

This includes:


- Supporting network design topologies, validation, deployment prerequisites, integration requirements, and Splunk visualizations for Vulnerability Scanning and Patching solutions within the Air Force Network.
- Installing, configuring, administering, managing, and maintaining the AER Splunk System Hardware and Software.

- Providing support for Splunk on both Linux and Windows platforms.


- Designing, coding, and maintaining custom scripts to aggregate data from all production Security Center Servers deployed for the ACAS Program Management Office (PMO) enterprise ACAS system, as well as developing and maintaining production-quality reports and dashboards.


HII Mission Technologies anticipates benefiting from the military background of the SkillBridge intern, viewing the internship as a mutually advantageous experience.

Assumptions/Restrictions

- The SkillBridge Intern must possess and maintain at least an Active Secret Security Clearance.

- The SkillBridge Intern must be available during core hours for essential meetings and training.

Training Outline

Phase 1 - Fundamentals

Week 1:
Orientation, introductions, and office familiarization.

Week 2:
Overview of AF Vulnerability Management and Splunk expectations.

Week 3:
Review of network design topologies, validation, and deployment requirements.

Week 4:
Execution requirements for AER.

Phase 2 - Project Assessment Support Operations

Week 5:
Assignment to Splunk Project and Requirements Review with Lead Engineer.

Weeks 6-7:
Supporting the development of the Splunk AER Plan.

Weeks 8-9:
Assisting in the planning and logistics for Splunk AER execution.

Week 10:
Preparation of equipment for Splunk AER task deployment.

Phase 3 - Assessment Execution Operations

Week 11:
Execution and test development for Splunk AER.

Week 12:
Execution and data collection for Splunk AER.

Week 13:
Techniques for data analysis related to Splunk AER.

Additional Goals

- Understanding AF Vulnerability Management.
- Familiarity with the Splunk AER process flow.
- Knowledge of Splunk AER Test and Evaluation (T&E).
- Comprehension of the corporate relationship between HII and C3I&N/HNI organization.

Minimum Qualifications

- Active-Duty Military ONLY within the final 180 days of active-duty service. Education and experience requirements are dependent on the Program of Instruction.

- Must possess a SECRET security clearance.

- A minimum of 5 years of combined relevant experience in the field.

- Current Splunk Certified Administrator certification is required.

- Current Splunk User and Power User certifications are required.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience in deploying applications within Splunk or administering the Splunk platform.

- Familiarity with data normalization and data modeling within the Splunk environment.

- Knowledge of Splunk architecture and best practices.

- Proficiency with Linux and command-line interfaces.

- Understanding of data collection methods, logging, Windows filtering, and tuning/base-lining data.

- Intermediate understanding of Solaris, Linux, and Windows operating systems, as well as Oracle/MSSQL databases.

- Experience with security technologies, including endpoint security tools, boundary protection technologies, network security tools, and vulnerability management technologies.

- Experience in developing documentation, architecture diagrams, and processes for end users.

- Familiarity with Regular Expressions (regex).

- Knowledge of advanced search and reporting commands.

- Understanding of network technology and common Internet protocols.

- Comprehension of system log files and other structured and unstructured data.
