Job Summary

As a Certified Nursing Assistant at William Newton Hospital, you will provide direct care to patients in the medical surgical setting, meeting their communication needs and assisting with activities of daily living. You will work under the supervision of a registered nurse, participating in performance improvement activities and maintaining regulatory agency requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide basic nursing care to acutely ill patients, including actions that meet psychosocial needs and physical needs.
  • Meet communication needs of patients, demonstrating performance reflecting initiative and responsibility.
  • Perform other duties, including end of shift activities, as assigned within the Nursing Assistant's scope of practice.
  • Assist in admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
  • Perform basic patient care responsibilities, including a.m. and p.m. care activities, considering needs specific to the standard of care for patients' age and condition.
  • Notify appropriate licensed personnel when patients complain of pain.
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate to the RN any observed changes in patient status and responses.
  • Maintain awareness of the needs of the pediatric, geriatric, and general patient population.
  • Demonstrate ability to assist with feeding patients and maintaining fluid balance with technique appropriate for patients' age and physical condition.
  • Elevate head of bed for safety.
  • Provide explanation to patients and families prior to administering care to patients; answer questions within scope of practice.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform treatments and provide services within the scope of practice.
  • Communicate appropriately and clearly to floor supervisor, house supervisors, coworkers, and nurses.
  • Consult other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to patients' needs.
Requirements
  • Adhere to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
  • Complete annual educational requirements, i.e., mandatory marbled packets and annual Medical Surgical Competency Checklist.
  • Maintain regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain and ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled, complete work within designated time.
  • Wear identification while on duty, use computerized time system correctly.
  • Complete required in-services in a timely fashion.
  • Attend staff meetings, committee, CQI, and management meetings, as appropriate.
  • Complete annual laboratory testing, TB testing, per hospital policy.
  • Comply with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Communicate the mission, vision, and core values, ethics, and goals of the hospital.
  • Work at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments, and staff.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety, and infection control.
  • Demonstrate compliance with hourly rounding.
  • Demonstrate compliance with no pass rule. Will not pass a call light going off. Will promptly answer call lights.
  • Demonstrate compliance with updating white boards in patient rooms.
  • Complete work assignments within designated times. Utilize for efficiency time management.
  • Use AIDET.
Regulatory Requirements
  • High School graduate or equivalent is preferred.
  • Successful completion of certified nursing assistant program preferred.
  • Current BCLS (CPR) certification.
  • Minimum of six months to one year of related work experience preferred.
