Join Our Team at Bend Metro and Park Recreation District
We are seeking passionate Instructors to lead art classes for both youth and adults.
About the Role:
Our Art Instructors are responsible for designing and delivering specialized classes and activities. They create lesson plans, prepare necessary materials, instruct participants, monitor progress, and evaluate class effectiveness.
- Ceramics: Wheel throwing, Hand Building, Sculpture, Kiln Work
- Conducts assigned classes, programs, and activities.
- Plans, organizes, and implements curriculum aligned with program objectives and guidelines.
- Ensures the safety, comfort, and progress of participants.
- Builds rapport with participants and addresses their questions and concerns.
- Collaborates with management to develop, plan, and schedule classes.
- Communicates with staff regarding facility, equipment, and supply requirements.
- Sets up, takes down, and cleans up after classes as necessary.
- Addresses program-specific risk management and safety issues.
- Facilitates the inclusion of participants with special needs.
- Manages incidents according to established procedures.
- Acts as a mandatory reporter and adheres to reporting guidelines.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
What You'll Need for Success:
Strong Knowledge of:
- Recreational activities relevant to the instruction and supervision provided;
- Theory, principles, and practices in the specialized area;
- Curriculum development and effective teaching methodologies.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the specialized area;
- Communicate effectively with diverse groups;
- Prepare and present lessons tailored to various audiences, considering age and skill levels;
- Manage disruptions and conflicts while addressing customer service and emergency situations;
- Collaborate effectively with others to foster positive relationships with staff and participants.
Specialty Instructor Required Experience & Training:
- High School diploma or equivalent; college coursework or vocational training in a related field preferred; AND
- Two (2) years of professional experience in the specialty area; OR
- A satisfactory combination of experience and training.
- Some teaching experience is preferred.
Works under the guidance of a Recreation Coordinator.
Supervision Exercised:
Provides direct leadership to Recreation 1 and 2 positions and volunteers as needed in enrichment programs.
Working Conditions:
- Work schedule typically includes weekdays with occasional weekends and holidays.
- Ability to walk and stand for extended periods, with frequent climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting.
- Normal mental and visual attention is required throughout the work.
- Physical exertion includes frequent walking, bending, and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, as well as pushing, pulling, and kneeling to manage equipment and supplies.
- Exposure to large crowds, challenging individuals, illness, and periods of high demand.
Applicants will be evaluated based on their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training, as well as their willingness to learn the necessary skills for the position.
