The Radiation Oncology Physicist plays a crucial role in maintaining exceptional standards in the planning, optimization, delivery, and assessment of radiation therapy. This position is responsible for ensuring the precise and consistent operation of radiological equipment while validating the accuracy and sufficiency of treatment plans and dose calculations. Furthermore, the Clinical Medical Physicist serves as the primary resource within the clinic for the safe application of radiation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure that all radiation oncology treatment machines, simulation devices, and sealed brachytherapy sources are calibrated in accordance with established protocols. Collaborate in the execution of a comprehensive quality control program for radiation-producing equipment to guarantee their ongoing acceptable performance for patient safety and treatment efficacy.
- Assist the Chief Physicist in defining technical specifications for the selection of new equipment, oversee the installation process, conduct acceptance testing upon completion, and evaluate performance parameters to ensure accurate clinical implementation of new technology.
- Implement and uphold quality assurance procedures for the planning and delivery of radiotherapy, including the establishment of technical specifications and tolerances, as well as the procedural flow involved in the process (including supervision and quality control review of treatment plans and dose calculations).
- Develop a comprehensive error prevention system, including a method for learning from incidents (including near misses) with an emphasis on process improvement to minimize the risk of future occurrences; ensure that clinical and physics procedures undergo a risk-informed assessment aimed at reducing risks to both patients and staff.
- Serve as a resource for training and ongoing education for all Radiation Oncology personnel.
Position Requirements:
- Master's Degree in a relevant field is required.
- Certification in Therapeutic Radiological Physics is mandatory from one of the following:
- The American Board of Radiology
- The American Board of Medical Physics
- The Canadian College of Physics in Medicine
- CPR Certification is preferred.
- Experience as a radiation oncology medical physicist is essential, including clinical experience with linac calibrations and quality control, treatment planning system quality control and routine usage, sealed isotope therapy, radiation safety, IMRT planning and delivery, computer systems quality control, and medical physics program documentation.
- This position may require up to 50% local travel.
- The COVID-19 vaccination may be a condition of employment.
- All candidates who accept an offer of employment will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment background check and drug screening as a condition of employment.
