Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Technician - Mechanical Systems Specialist to join our team at the NC Department of Transportation. As a key member of our maintenance crew, you will be responsible for performing semi-skilled repairs and maintenance on various heavy equipment and vehicles.

About the Role

This is a full-time position that requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You will be responsible for inspecting, servicing, repairing, rebuilding, and diagnosing mechanical systems on a variety of engines and equipment. Your tasks will include inspecting and replacing brake pads and shoes, regulators, alternators, and belts, as well as fitting or repairing standard aftermarket upgrades and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and replace brake pads and shoes, regulators, alternators, and belts, and/or fitting or repairing standard aftermarket upgrades and equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance on tires and tubes, wheels & rims, cranking systems, lighting systems, cooling systems, and hydraulic systems
  • Perform a variety of recurring and related tasks and repairs
  • Work includes performance of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving the service, inspection, repair, rebuild, and diagnosis of a diverse number of mechanical systems for a variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment
  • Determine materials, techniques, and tools to accomplish work assignments

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned
  • May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III, or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F
  • Must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date

Estimated Salary Range: $45,000 - $65,000 per year
