Job Summary

A skilled Senior Machinist is required to operate computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools, such as lathes and milling machines, to produce precision parts for machines, instruments, and tools. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machining and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate CNC machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
  • Machine quality tooling using a variety of equipment, including engine lathes, EDM, drill presses, and shapers.
  • Use measuring instruments, such as micrometers and calipers, to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Monitor machine and tooling levels, and perform routine maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Review samples, drawings, and instructions to understand specifications of output.
  • Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job.
  • Monitor output to ensure consistency with specifications and discard defects.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Vocational school or apprenticeship is a plus.
  • Minimum four years related experience and/or training preferred.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent manual dexterity, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of metal properties and other materials.
  • Familiarity with performing lock out/tag out as an authorized user.
  • Experience operating the overhead crane.
  • Satisfactory completion of Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test.

Work Environment:

The Senior Machinist will interact with historic machinery throughout the facility, which often involves proximity to heat, noise, debris, overhead cranes, and other potentially dangerous equipment. The Senior Machinist may encounter high levels of floor and overhead traffic due to material transportation within the department, which can cause vibration and airborne disturbances.
