Job Title: Study Skills Instructor

The University of Washington's Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Study Skills Instructor to join their team. As a Study Skills Instructor, you will play a critical role in supporting the academic success of high school students from low-income backgrounds.

Job Summary:

The Study Skills Instructor will teach, tutor, and mentor program participants in mathematics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, statistics, and physics. You will also prepare students for SAT and ACT exams, conduct academic assessments, and track outcomes. Additionally, you will participate in the planning and implementation of program activities, establish and maintain collaborative professional relationships with school staff, and attend meetings as required.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct service to program participants, including teaching, tutoring, and mentoring in 1-on-1, small group, and whole class instruction formats.
  • Assess student work and progress; create lesson plans and materials for individuals, small groups, and whole class instruction.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of student participation and progress.
  • Plan and implement program activities, including Summer Academy math department coordination and field trip planning and supervision.
  • Attend meetings to share information and build relationships among numerous stakeholders, including the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity, College Access Unit, high school staff and/or math departments, and community partners.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in education and at least two years of professional, full-time experience (or equivalent part-time experience over multiple years) teaching math subjects to students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and/or disabled backgrounds.
  • Washington State Teacher Certification preferred.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Past TRIO participant, and/or bilingual preferred.
  • Experience with federal regulations and with federal TRIO programs, which support the educational development of low-income, first-generation college attendees, and underrepresented students preferred.
  • Personal experience overcoming barriers similar to those of the students served by the project preferred.
  • Understanding of partner schools and communities, and Washington state college access programs and college admission requirements preferred.
