About the Position:

We are seeking a highly skilled HVAC Technician II to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This includes:

  • Locating and repairing faults in mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components;
  • Maintaining cooling towers, hot water and chilled water piping and controls, direct expansion systems, fans and blowers, starters, pneumatic and electrical controls, condensate drains, domestic and commercial refrigeration, walk-in coolers and freezers, water fountains, and ice machines;
  • Installing new motors, pumps, compressors, and other parts as necessary;
  • Cleaning, repairing, replacing, and/or adjusting pneumatic, electric, and motor controls, and related safety devices;
  • Performing initial settings and final adjustments of refrigeration and heating and air conditioning systems; modifying existing installations to obtain required results;
  • Repairing or replacing other functional components of HVAC equipment or systems as necessary;
  • Carrying out designated preventive maintenance and seasonal start-up and shut-down procedures;
  • Analyzing HVAC systems and controls to determine problems and initiating repairs as directed by supervisor;
  • Driving a vehicle to and from locations and keeping it supplied with tools and materials and keeping it maintained and in an orderly, clean condition;
  • Performing miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting the equipment and mechanical areas;
  • Picking up materials from suppliers when requested;
  • Inspecting areas and reporting problems to supervisor;
  • Maintaining paperwork and electronic communications, including work orders, including recording time, orders, and materials on work orders in an expedient manner;
  • Following established university and departmental policies and procedures; following established safety procedures and reporting accidents and problems to supervisor promptly;
  • Performing assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks to develop skills in the HVAC trade; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned, including snow removal during inclement weather events.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 4+ years) in the HVAC trade;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the HVAC trade;
  • Knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions;
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national mechanical codes;
  • Ability to use necessary hand and power tools and testing equipment;
  • Ability to analyze HVAC systems and controls to determine problems and initiate repairs as directed by supervisor;
  • EPA-approved universal refrigerant recovery type I, II, & III CFC licenses; and
  • Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 5+ years) in commercial HVAC.
