Unit Information:
Department: Medical Psych | RN
- Unit: Medical Psych Canyon View RN
- Number of Beds: 28, with most rooms being dual occupancy. In cases where a patient cannot have a roommate, one bed is blocked. There are 2 restraint rooms available. The average daily census is between 15-16 patients.
- Nurse to Patient Ratios: 1:07
- Required Certifications: BLS, MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) or CPI preferred, along with an enhanced background check.
- Patient Demographics/Common Diagnoses: Includes suicidal tendencies, depression, psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and detox from alcohol and opioids. Patients must be medically stable enough to not require IVs. Both acute and lower acuity patients share common hallways due to the facility layout. Patients aged 18 and older are accepted if they can be safely admitted and are medically stable, having been cleared in the ER prior to admission. Patients are received from various ERs across the state and surrounding areas.
- Experience or Required Skills: A minimum of 1 year of experience is preferred. RNs and psychiatric technicians with relevant past experience are favored, but not mandatory due to the comprehensive training provided in-house.
- EMR System: EPIC
- IV Administration on Unit: No IVs are administered on this unit.
- Charge Nurse & House Supervisor Availability: A Charge RN is present 24 hours a day, responsible for all admission tasks and will only take patients when staffing levels necessitate.
- Use of Physical Restraints: Yes, while not required, awareness of their use is preferred. Restraints are rarely employed; verbal de-escalation is prioritized, but chemical, seclusion, 4-point, and physical restraints may be utilized if necessary.
- Support Staff: Psychiatric Technician I provides 15-minute checks, toiletries, meal monitoring, and other supportive tasks. Psychiatric Technicians II (Activity Therapists) assist with activity groups and patient engagement.
- Respiratory Therapy Availability: RT is not available on the unit. CPAP and supplemental O2 are monitored by nursing during the night, and small volume nebulizers will be administered if ordered. Patients requiring O2 during the day are not accepted.
- Telemetry/Monitoring Techs: There are no telemetry services on the unit. EKGs are read by the Cardiology team only when ordered and are utilized prior to medication initiation when necessary. Symptomatic patients are transferred to the ED for cardiac evaluation.
- Shift Scheduling: 12-hour shifts from 7 AM to 7 PM. The scheduler will create the schedule, aiming to accommodate traveler requests as much as possible. Additional shifts or overtime are not available.
- Weekend Requirements: Every other weekend is expected, with potential for more if needed.
- Holiday Requirements: Holidays may be required based on staffing needs.
- Call or Standby Requirement: None
- Floating Requirements: May be floated to Magic Valley Hospital if census is low to provide 1:1 staffing.
- Dress Code: Navy Blue scrubs are required.
- Orientation: 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation in addition to general orientation.
Note: This facility has a radius rule of 50 miles. To ensure compliance, candidates' permanent addresses will be required for submission to confirm they are outside of the specified radius.
