Job Description

The Lead Registered Nurse is responsible for assisting the physician and staff with the daily coordination of patient care and physician access. This role provides clinical direction to staff members to ensure that patients receive compassionate, effective, and efficient high-quality clinical care. The Lead Registered Nurse functions as the liaison between patients, staff, physicians, and leadership, ensuring adherence to evidence-based clinical decision-making.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintains efficient patient flow and demonstrates telephone triage protocols and documents in the Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Schedules appointments appropriately and accurately according to department guidelines and employs appropriate and timely use of Tasking in EHR
  • Monitors clinical inboxes in EHR and appropriately enters orders as delegate
  • Effectively communicates problems, concerns, or issues to the Office Supervisor/Manager appropriately and promptly
  • Facilitates transition of care to UCC/Hospital
Quality Assurance
  • Assures all patients are correctly identified prior to providing and/or documenting care
  • Maintains a working knowledge of Emergency Response system and adheres to universal safety precautions when administering medications and disposal of medical waste
  • Checks and maintains point of care testing logs, medication refrigerator logs, and emergency equipment in accordance with policy, and is responsible for problem resolution
Clinical Practice
  • Assists with proper preparation for patient visits and prepares pertinent information needed for patient visits
  • Provides patient education and delivers direct patient care within the scope of licensure and in accordance with SMG policy
  • Collects lab specimens according to departmental guidelines, accurately labels specimens, and obtains vital signs: BP, temp, pulse, height & weight accurately and completely as required
  • Administers injections according to appropriate protocol and documents injections accurately in EHR
  • Reviews and updates medication list in EHR and demonstrates understanding of prescription control and prescription refill procedures
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
  • Assists the physician and staff with the daily coordination of patient care and physician access
  • Prioritizes patient care by implementing physician orders and nursing procedures
  • Functions as the liaison between patients, staff, physicians, and leadership
  • Demonstrates flexibility with various work schedules and leads/participates in daily clinical huddles
Additional Lead Position Responsibilities
  • Coordinates with Supervisory staff to ensure schedules are entered appropriately in the scheduling program
  • Works collaboratively with Office Supervisor/Clinical Coordinator to provide adequate staff coverage
  • Responsible for oversight of medical and office supplies and ordering of supplies, including supplies for in-office procedures
  • Engages with leadership staff to assess clinical skills and competency
  • Escalates concerns and issues timely and appropriately to leadership
  • Responsible for addressing and resolving patient complaints/issues and communicating issues and resolution to leadership

Education, Certification, Computer, and Training Requirements
  • Associates degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred
  • New Jersey State Nursing License and BLS certification required
  • 0-1 year experience. 2-4 years' experience preferred
  • Previous leadership experience preferred
  • Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to perform diverse work assignments with time limitations and with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to use problem-solving, critical thinking, and priority-setting skills
