Job Overview and Responsibilities
The position of Forensic Scientist is an entry-level role designed for training and development. Forensic Scientists are responsible for conducting routine and less intricate biological and DNA examinations and analyses. They may provide support to senior-level Forensic Scientists in scientific inquiries and the evaluation of physical evidence collected from crime scenes and illicit drug laboratories. Responsibilities include performing biological screenings and DNA analyses to create DNA profiles from evidence in straightforward cases involving known suspects, unidentified individuals, and missing persons. Additionally, they will offer technical and administrative oversight of analyses performed by other DNA analysts, ensuring compliance with laboratory standards and protocols. To maintain proficiency and expertise as a DNA casework analyst, participation in both internal and external assessments is required, including those mandated by accreditation standards.
Special Qualifications
- A fingerprint check is mandatory prior to employment.
- Candidates must successfully pass a Background Investigation, which may encompass a Criminal Background check and a review of governmental records.
- A Medical Evaluation is required, and candidates must obtain clearance before employment.
- A Drug Screening test must be completed and passed prior to hiring.
Eligibility Criteria
- To qualify for the Forensic Scientist position, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications outlined in the class specifications and be eligible for transfer, reinstatement, or possess current list eligibility.
- Candidates with a degree in physical or biological sciences who lack 3 semester hours of Quantitative Analysis may still take the examination but must provide proof of completion of these hours before being eligible for appointment.
- To qualify for the Senior Forensic Scientist position, candidates must be eligible for transfer, reinstatement, or have current list eligibility. This classification does not provide ongoing examination opportunities.
