Role Responsibilities

The Medical Assistant (MA) operates under the guidance and licensure of a Physician or Advanced Practice Clinician in a clinical setting.

Key Responsibilities

Administrative Duties:

  • Organizes necessary documents and supplies.
  • Utilizes computer applications effectively in the office.
  • Coordinates and monitors appointments, admissions, tests, and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate medical records and information.
  • Manages inventory of supplies, ensuring availability for patient care.
  • Documents patient history and vital information accurately.

Financial Responsibilities:

  • Assigns procedural and diagnostic coding under provider direction.
  • Handles pre-authorizations and referrals per insurance requirements.
  • Facilitates timely billing through proper documentation.

Clinical Duties:

  • Prioritizes patient needs through various communication methods.
  • Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately.
  • Prepares and maintains examination and treatment areas.
  • Conducts complete intake processes as directed by providers.
  • Administers screening tests as required.
  • Assists providers during examinations and procedures.
  • Provides patient education as per established guidelines.
  • Reports significant changes in patient conditions to the Physician.
  • Ensures accurate follow-through on pharmacy refills and lab results.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Program or equivalent experience.
  • Current RN/LPN license may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • National MA certification from recognized organizations.
  • Experience in an outpatient clinic or healthcare setting.

Physical Requirements:

Regularly requires the ability to see and read information, assess patient needs, and operate medical equipment. Frequent communication with patients and care providers is essential, requiring clear verbal skills and the ability to hear and understand spoken information. Manual dexterity is necessary for handling delicate equipment and performing various tasks. The role may involve lifting and moving patients and supplies, necessitating a full range of motion.
