Position Overview:
The Geotechnical Soil Analyst will engage in a variety of subsurface assessments and analyses of soil characteristics, including structural properties, groundwater levels, and potential environmental risks associated with site development initiatives. This role may also involve overseeing construction phase evaluations and inspections.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct both routine and advanced field exploration activities for various project types, including assessments of Seasonal High Water and groundwater levels, soil classification according to USCS and USDA standards, rock core analysis, hydraulic conductivity, and groundwater well installations.
  • Effectively relay field investigation directives to drilling subcontractors based on project specifications.
  • Communicate findings from subsurface explorations to the project team and clients as necessary.
  • Document subsurface composition and groundwater levels through detailed field boring/test pit logs.
  • Analyze field data to formulate design recommendations and development considerations.
  • Coordinate laboratory testing based on field investigation outcomes.
  • Draft preliminary geotechnical engineering reports incorporating field data and engineering evaluations for review by project managers.
  • Supervise engineering services during construction for projects involving various foundation types and earthwork operations.
  • Compile construction phase inspection reports detailing engineering observations and test results for managerial review.
  • Review project documentation to identify geotechnical factors.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Soil Science, Geology, or a related field; a concentration in geotechnical engineering is preferred.
  • 0-3 years of experience in geotechnical consulting, construction material inspections, or laboratory testing. Experience in soil classification, hydraulic testing, and subsurface exploration is advantageous.
  • Experience in onsite soil/septic evaluations and hydrogeologic studies is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Willingness to work in both outdoor and office environments as required.
  • Certification as a Professional Soil Scientist (CPSS), Professional Geologist, or Engineer in Training (EIT) is preferred, or the ability to obtain these certifications within nine months of employment.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Capability to maintain and operate personal and/or company vehicles.
  • Preferred certifications include ACI concrete field-testing technician, accredited construction inspection/materials testing, OSHA 40, OSHA 10, and/or APNGA gauge training.
  • Hands-on experience with both metric and English measurement tools is essential.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn and utilize software for entering field data, laboratory results, and timesheets.
  • Independent and critical thinking skills.
  • Self-motivated individual capable of working independently and collaboratively.
  • Familiarity with mapping websites for due diligence and site investigations.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, or similar software for site plan production.
  • Proficient in various geotechnical software applications.
  • Experience interacting with regulatory agencies and review professionals.
  • Understanding of the planning and zoning processes.

Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to perform essential job functions, including standing, sitting, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Frequent lifting and/or moving of up to 35 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds.
  • Visual acuity is necessary for preparing and analyzing data, viewing computer screens, and conducting extensive reading and inspections.

Work Environment:

  • Field inspections are influenced by construction schedules, which may require early morning or late evening visits.
  • Work conditions include both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Approximately 50 to 90 percent of the work week will be spent outdoors, often on uneven terrain and in varying weather conditions.
  • Exposure to hazards such as moving mechanical parts, vehicles, electrical currents, and chemicals may occur.
