Job Description

Nevada City School of the Arts (NCSOTA) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate paraprofessional to support students with special needs in an inclusive setting.


Job Title: Paraprofessional & After-School Caregiver

Schedule: Full-time, 2024-25 School Year

Wage: $17.65 - $25.17 per hour, depending on experience


Summary: The paraprofessional will assist students with special needs under the direction of a certificated teacher and resource specialist. The after-school caregiver will support the Afterschool Care Director in implementing a quality program that enriches students academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in individual instruction and recording of results in basic academics, communication skills, vocational skills, and self-help skills according to a specifically prescribed program identified in the pupil's IEP.
  • Provide one-to-one tutoring and small group instruction, plan lessons for small groups, and organize materials.
  • Support the school's academic program by assisting students where needed.
  • Monitor and support individual students with disabilities.
  • Monitor and supervise students within a variety of school environments for the purpose of providing academic instruction and ensuring the safety and welfare of students.
  • Report observations and incidents of student behavior requiring disciplinary measures to the special education case managers, teachers, and the School Director.
  • Confer with teachers and/or other school personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluating student progress and implementing student objectives.
  • Support and prepare lesson plans, student projects, and homework assignments and correct student work when completed.
  • Participate in staff meetings, SSTs, or IEPs if requested and as needed.
  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Agree to specific work-related training.
  • Complete mandatory training within 6 weeks of employment and every year thereafter.
  • Perform conflict resolution using talk it outs, etc.
  • Abide by all personnel policies and procedures adopted by NCSOTA and the At-Will Agreement.
  • Work with the Afterschool Care Director to ensure that the after-school program remains consistent with school philosophy.
  • Work with the Afterschool Care Director to create an atmosphere of high expectations for student behavior and responsibility.
  • Adhere to the School Compact in interpersonal relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, Licensure:

  • AA degree required or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 3 years working with children in a school setting, preferably with special education emphasis.
  • Formal conflict resolution or special education training a plus.
  • Qualified individual displays great patience and understanding while working with children.

  • Indoor/outdoor work environment.
  • Driving a vehicle to conduct work.

Other Requirements:

These requirements must be met prior to beginning employment and will be requested upon job offer acceptance.

  • Fingerprint and Background clearance.
  • Valid Tuberculosis clearance and every four years thereafter.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification within 45 days of employment and every two years thereafter.
  • Evidence of Automobile Insurance and valid California Driver's License.
  • Emotional demands: Great reserves of patience, tolerance, flexibility, and dedication.

Physical Demands: (with or without reasonable accommodations)

  • Mobility to sit on the floor, bend, reach, squat, and otherwise interact with small children.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying (maximum 40 lbs.), infrequent pushing and pulling.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer.
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
