As a key member of the trauma care team, the Trauma Care Registered Nurse is responsible for overseeing the Trauma Registry at Jefferson Health. This role involves the meticulous collection and submission of critical data to various trauma outcome studies and quality improvement programs. The nurse will play a vital role in providing care to trauma patients during scheduled clinic visits.
- Conducts thorough abstraction and completion of data for the Pennsylvania Trauma Outcome Study (PTOS) and Aria Health, aiming for a productivity target of 60 charts monthly through computerized systems.
- Engages in data abstraction for the National Trauma Data Bank and the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP).
- Completes the foundational Trauma Registry course within the first year of employment.
- Finishes the Abbreviated Injury Scale Course within the initial year of service.
- Participates in monthly educational sessions related to TQIP and successfully completes associated assessments.
- Attends weekly Performance Improvement meetings and monthly Multidisciplinary Peer Review sessions.
- Leads daily Trauma Rounds in the absence of the Trauma Program Director.
- Facilitates the Trauma Clinic, which includes scheduling appointments, providing patient care, and managing follow-up care for patients.
- Attends registry meetings organized by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) to stay updated on registry modifications, as evidenced by attendance certificates.
- Participates in the PTSF Fall Conference and other relevant forums as necessary.
- Represents the team at the National Annual TQIP Meeting as directed by leadership.
- Prepares for and engages in the PTSF site survey process to secure trauma center accreditation, as demonstrated by compiled reports.
- Ensures timely availability of trauma registry data for reports and research projects, as evidenced by completed documentation.
- Engages in ongoing education related to trauma registry to maintain expertise, including at least 8 contact hours annually, supported by attendance certificates.
- Conducts retrospective audits of medical records to identify performance improvement indicators related to trauma care delivery and documentation accuracy, as evidenced by completed quality management forms.
- Collaborates with pre-hospital personnel to assess the overall quality of trauma services, forwarding issues to relevant EMS coordinators for appropriate follow-up.
- Involves in Trauma Prevention initiatives, such as community education programs.
- Initiates Performance Improvement referrals and collaborates with the Trauma Program Director and Trauma Performance Improvement Nurse.
- Performs additional responsibilities as assigned by the Trauma Program Director within designated timelines.
Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program.
Experience: Previous experience in Emergency Room, Critical Care, or Medical/Surgical settings, along with proficiency in computer skills and familiarity with International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding.
Licensure/Certification/Registration Requirements: Current Registered Nurse license in Pennsylvania, completion of Trauma Nurse Course, and Critical Care Course.
