Job Opportunity

We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced educator to join our faculty as a Special Education Professional Practice faculty member at the Assistant Professor rank. This is a full-time, 10-month contract position at National Louis University's National College of Education.

About the Opportunity

This position involves teaching current and prospective special educators, preparing candidates to develop strong foundations in culturally sustaining classroom instruction and assessment, and engaging in disability-affirming teaching and curriculum development. The successful candidate will also engage in service to the program and college, including mentoring and advising graduate students, contributing to curriculum development, and participating in departmental and university committees.

Responsibilities
  • Teach 24 semester hours of graduate courses across Fall, Winter, and Spring terms, including core special education and related courses, and create an inclusive learning environment for all students.
  • Develop and teach courses, advise and mentor graduate students, and engage in thought leadership responsibilities, including collaborating with colleagues on curriculum and course development, grant proposals, and extracurricular activities.
  • Contribute to the university through service, including mentoring and advising responsibilities for graduate students, service to the department through program improvement and development, program recruitment, and program accreditation efforts, service to the college, and service to the larger university, community, and profession.
  • Support and lead efforts at the course, department, college, and university levels to address educational justice using an intersectional lens, including curriculum improvement and development, departmental and university committees, initiatives, and activities related to advancing racial, disability, and social justice.
  • Maintain and enhance community engagement and existing partnerships with community agencies and schools, working alongside other faculty members, leadership, and students to build relationships with administrators, teachers, and community organization leaders.
Qualifications
  1. Earned doctorate in Special Education or related Education or Learning fields. ABD would be considered if the dissertation would be completed by June 2024.
  2. A minimum of 5 years of PreK-22 teaching experience across various special education settings.
  3. Demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to advancing equity initiatives within an educational setting and the integration of pedagogies/alignment with the Illinois Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading (CRTL) standards.
Preferred Experiential Qualifications
  1. Experience teaching in urban contexts and efforts to address social justice.
  2. Experience with collaborative, participatory, community, or action research methodologies and practices.
  3. Comfort with assistive and instructional technology and experience teaching across modalities, including online, virtual/hybrid, and in-person/on-campus.
  4. Expertise in teaching literacy, math, and practicum courses required in our programs.
  5. Experience working with students with high and low-incidence disability designations at the PreK-22 level.
  6. Expertise in Practice-Based Teaching (PBT) and High-Leverage and Evidence-based Practices (HLPs).
  7. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
