We are seeking a highly skilled Data Engineer to join our team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. As a Data Engineer for KDI, you will play a critical role in designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines, including ETL and reporting workflows, as well as data management and data lifecycles.

About the Role:

The Knowledge Discovery Infrastructure (KDI) program is a key initiative at ORNL, aimed at facilitating research activities on data entrusted to the laboratory by the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs and other agencies. As a Data Engineer for KDI, you will have the opportunity to work on some of the most ambitious and impactful research and development programs in healthcare informatics, bioinformatics, and computer science.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop high-scale, robust data warehouses and data lakes, with a focus on state-of-the-art solutions for healthcare, life sciences, and genomics.
  • Work with research teams to understand data needs and provide domain expertise on data models, query optimizations, and schema interpretation.
  • Design, build, and launch new data marts for major national research programs and ETL processes.
  • Design and develop architectures for intake, curation, organization, and dissemination of data in support of data science and related fields.
  • Research and evaluate state-of-the-art data and information management technologies.
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers to produce reliable data products and systems.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, mathematics, engineering, or a related field, with 5-7 years of experience in database design and development.
  • Proven experience in database design and/or development, with a strong understanding of database system administration.
  • Experience with OLTP and data warehousing, SQL Server preferred.
  • Experience working with Big Data processing frameworks such as Spark, Dask, and Pandas, and familiarity with NoSQL architectures.
  • Ability to conduct tasks independently and communicate effectively to team members and partners.
