  • The Surgical First Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting surgeons during procedures, executing significant surgical tasks under professional oversight. This position demands collaboration with the surgical team to ensure patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes.
  • The RNFA is expected to uphold departmental standards for professional accountability and continuous improvement.
  • A commitment to professional development is essential, requiring a minimum of 100 continuing education credits, with 30 credits in advanced topics within a six-year period.
  • The RNFA must provide age-appropriate care, demonstrated through the completion of an age-specific competency checklist.
  • Proficiency in technical skills is required, validated through core and annual skills assessments.
  • Critical thinking abilities must be demonstrated in high-pressure situations, applying established standards and practices of perioperative nursing.
  • A valid Florida RN license is mandatory.
  • Completion of an accredited RNFA program and an assisting course is required.
  • Candidates should have at least one year of experience as an RNFA or be a current staff member in training, with documentation of participation in a minimum of 150 surgical cases in the relevant specialty.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications are required, along with current credentials as a certified first assistant.
