Position Summary and Requirements
As a Surgical Technologist, you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality surgical care. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with the circulating nurse during surgical procedures and ensuring the sterile environment is maintained. Key duties include preparing and organizing sterile supplies and equipment, assisting the surgeon by providing necessary instruments and materials, and adhering to established safety protocols and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess and procure the necessary equipment and supplies for surgical procedures based on physician preferences and patient requirements.
- Prepare surgical instruments and supplies in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
- Follow aseptic techniques to open sterile packs and supplies for each procedure.
- Monitor the sterile field throughout the procedure and take corrective actions as needed.
- Prepare medications and solutions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, following physician directives.
- Maintain accountability for surgical instruments and materials during procedures to prevent retention of foreign objects.
- Address any discrepancies in item counts and communicate with the appropriate personnel.
- Adhere to safety protocols when handling sharp instruments and hazardous materials.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a surgical technologist program or equivalent experience in a surgical setting.
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist is required for those entering practice after specific regulations.
- Current certification from recognized bodies such as the National Board for Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) is preferred.
