Job Overview

Position Summary

The Laboratory Supervisor is accountable for overseeing the daily operations of the laboratory, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Administrative Duties

  • Manage laboratory operations for assigned shifts, ensuring adherence to personnel policies.
  • Collaborate with department heads to establish departmental goals and objectives.
  • Conduct interviews, hire staff, and manage disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Prepare and conduct performance evaluations for laboratory personnel.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels by overseeing work schedules and authorizing overtime when required.
  • Generate reports for management and relevant committees as requested.

Technical Oversight

  • Serve as a technical expert for laboratory instrumentation and procedures.
  • Evaluate and implement new procedures and technologies to enhance laboratory performance.
  • Monitor technical performance to ensure accuracy and timely results.
  • Report quality control and proficiency testing issues to management.
  • Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and regulatory requirements.

Budget Management

  • Assist in the preparation of the laboratory budget, including salaries, supplies, and services.
  • Monitor monthly budget variances and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Recommend capital purchases and assist in justifying new equipment needs.

Inventory Control

  • Oversee the procurement of laboratory supplies and maintain an efficient inventory control system.
  • Evaluate new equipment purchases as directed by management.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Participate in hospital-wide committees and meetings.
  • Communicate laboratory issues effectively to management and staff.
  • Facilitate regular staff meetings to promote shared governance.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure laboratory compliance with CAP, CLIA, JCAHO, and FDA regulations.
  • Coordinate self-inspections and manage regulatory audits.

Safety Standards

  • Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with OSHA and hospital policies.
  • Ensure all staff comply with safety training and procedures.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in high-complexity testing within a CLIA/CAP environment.
  • At least two years of supervisory experience in a clinical laboratory setting.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of laboratory operations and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to quality.
  • Proficient in laboratory information systems and data management.
