Position Details:
UPMC is currently looking for a full-time Laboratory Specimen Technician to cover the overnight shift from 9 pm to 5 am, with responsibilities during weekends and holidays.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit a strong service orientation by demonstrating courtesy, respect, enthusiasm, and a positive demeanor in all work interactions. Take initiative and assist in completing departmental tasks. Monitor pneumatic tube and courier deliveries to ensure prompt specimen processing.
  • Identify and resolve any errors in specimen requests or other issues. Seek assistance when necessary. Complete quality assurance forms for unacceptable specimens and document any discrepancies. Utilize centrifugation for sample separation and label aliquot tubes as per established protocols; ensure samples are stored at the correct temperatures.
  • Record and input the specimen receipt time into the laboratory information system. Address all telephone inquiries regarding proper specimen collection, results, and reference ranges. Adhere to health and safety regulations when handling biohazardous materials or sharp instruments to prevent exposure.
  • Verify patient specimens, including blood, urine, and other bodily fluids, against requisitions or labels, ensuring all information matches the accompanying documentation. Properly request laboratory information if necessary. Prepare, package, and dispatch specimens to external locations as required.
  • Receive, categorize, and prioritize all specimens in accordance with laboratory policies. Share specimens as needed and inform supervisors of any issues or requests requiring clarification.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the work area throughout the shift. Participate in the orientation and training of new laboratory personnel. Perform routine technical and clerical tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Preferred experience of three to six months in a clinical laboratory, physician's office, or similar medical setting, with familiarity in Medical Terminology and Laboratory Information Systems.
  • Preferred experience of three to six months in a customer service environment, such as a call center or distribution center.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse age groups and populations, both in person and over the phone.

Licensure and Certifications:

  • Act 34 clearance required.
