Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Care/Specialized Services Supervisor to join our team at the University of Iowa. This is a full-time position that will be responsible for leading a team of laboratory professionals and ensuring the smooth operation of the hematology/coagulation laboratory.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical specimens.
  • Serve as the technical expert for patient test result interpretation, specific tasks, work processes, and procedures performed in hematology and coagulation section.
  • Communicate and disseminate general information and policy or procedure changes to unit/shift personnel.
  • Plan, prioritize, and direct work activities to ensure smooth and efficient operation.
  • Investigate and resolve problems concerning patient testing and procedures.
  • Assist with interviewing and selecting new staff.
  • Provide leadership for discipline-specific work groups.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of new procedures and instrumentation.
  • Monitor equipment performance, diagnose instrument problems/malfunctions, and make repairs or initiate service requests.
  • Monitor quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing; implement corrective actions for effective testing.
  • Coordinate and participate in continuing education activities and events.
  • Monitor employee compliance with approved regulatory and departmental guidelines.
  • Assist in developing the strategic goals and objectives for the section.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate training programs for staff.
  • Assist with the development of competency assessment tools.
  • Conduct competency assessment for staff.
  • Collaborate with other UIHC departmental committees, vendors, and external healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in the review, revision, and implementation of standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in the evaluation of work processes to enhance operational efficiencies, increase productivity, and decrease costs.
  • Provide oversight of inventory and supply management.
  • Perform additional tasks as may be assigned by manager.
Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Reasonable (1-3 years) clinical laboratory experience within the past five (5) years is required.
  • Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and skills shown by successful experience.
