Protecting the Health of Airmen in Extreme Environments

The United States Air Force requires specialized medical care for its pilots and crew members who operate in extreme conditions. Aerospace Medicine Specialists/Flight Surgeons play a critical role in ensuring the health and well-being of these individuals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Providing primary care to pilots and crew members
  • Diagnosing and managing medical conditions related to extreme environments
  • Developing and implementing medical protocols to prevent and treat illnesses
  • Collaborating with other medical professionals to ensure comprehensive care
Requirements
  • MD or D.O. degree and completion of an ACGME- or AOA-accredited program of postgraduate specialty training
  • Completion of a primary course in aerospace medicine
  • Aeronautical rating of Flight Surgeon, Senior Flight Surgeon, or Chief Flight Surgeon
  • Completion of a residency at a fully accredited residency program
  • Minimum 12 months of experience as a flight surgeon (Aerospace Medicine Specialist only)
  • Board eligible in Aerospace Medicine (Aerospace Medicine Specialist only)
  • Completion of Officer Training School course
  • Between the ages of 18 and 48
