PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Work is conducted under the supervision and direction of the Director of Public Works. This is an entry-level, semi-skilled position focused on assisting with the mechanical maintenance and refurbishment of vehicles and machinery.

This role is responsible for performing basic servicing on cars, trucks, backhoes, lawn equipment, and conducting essential maintenance and mechanical repairs for municipal vehicles and equipment.

Fundamental mechanical abilities and proficiency with basic tools are essential for success in this position.

This role is classified as an emergency essential position, requiring the execution of emergency tasks and actions to prepare, repair, and restore the City before, during, and after any adverse weather events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, ice storm, etc.) or other situations (natural or manmade).


KEY DUTIES
Provides mechanical services for cars, trucks, and various equipment types.
Performs oil changes, replaces belts, brakes, and conducts various service and transmission repairs.
Changes tires and repairs different types of tires.
Conducts bodywork on various vehicles and equipment.
Diagnoses mechanical issues and evaluates problems with vehicles.
Changes fluids and replenishes necessary fluids.
Replaces belts and other routine maintenance items.
Executes preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
Assists senior mechanics with more complex repairs and diagnostics.
Completes other assigned tasks as necessary.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Familiarity with the functions and components of automotive equipment.
Understanding of the types, grades, and applications of automotive lubricants, including the ability to interpret lubrication charts.
Capability to operate various types of equipment.
Proficiency in using power tools, including impact and compressor-based tools.
Strong skills in handling mechanical tools.
Ability to measure and interpret measurements accurately.
Comprehension of the differences between metric and standard measurements.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work from lubrication charts.
Strong skills in maintaining safety in a mechanical environment.
Good housekeeping practices in a traditional workshop setting.
Ability to repair tires and tubes.
Willingness and eagerness to learn new skills independently.
Strong reading skills to research solutions to mechanical problems.
Physical strength and agility sufficient for automotive servicing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required.
Valid Driver's License.
One (1) year of experience in servicing automotive equipment and performing mechanical tasks.

Work involves moderate to extreme exposure to various disagreeable conditions (i.e., inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, strong odors, or dust).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works both indoors and outdoors throughout the year. The work environment is often noisy and dirty.
