VCA Palm Beach Veterinary Specialists is a leading multispecialty and emergency hospital in southeast Florida, renowned for its state-of-the-art facilities and exceptional patient care. Our hospital has a rich history, dating back to 1998, and has grown into a 34,000 sq. ft. building, previously recognized as the veterinary hospital of the year.
The surgical internship program is led by two board-certified veterinary surgeons with diverse backgrounds and interests, providing our surgical interns with exposure to various surgical techniques and clinical approaches. Our hospital boasts a range of departments, including surgery, internal medicine, radiation therapy, neurology, canine rehabilitation therapy, and emergency and critical care, supported by over 80 staff members.
Our facility features in-house and national reference laboratory services, blood bank, I-131 therapy, ultrasonography, endoscopy, a 1.5 MRI, and a brand new 64-slice CT scan. We have also recently installed a new Halcyon linear accelerator and a 4K arthroscopic tower with near infrared capability.
The surgical internship is designed for candidates who have completed a 1-year rotating internship, 3 years of general practice, or a prior surgical internship, and is intended for those planning to pursue a surgical residency. The internship focuses on developing a strong candidate for residency, with support for completing a publication submitted to a reputable journal by the VIRMP MATCH date.
Key aspects of the internship include:
- Active didactic rounds on a weekly basis, including journal club, Tobias and Johnson book rounds, soft tissue and orthopedic case rounds.
- Opportunities to develop surgical planning, surgical approaches and closures, literature interpretation, manuscript preparation, boards preparation, client communication, and patient care skills.
- Support for residency interviews and the opportunity to apply for a VCA-sponsored residency at an academic institution.
