Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team at the U.S. Department of the Interior. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for operating heavy equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, and level earth to rough specifications on various projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate two or more types of heavy equipment to perform earthwork tasks on projects such as trail construction, road building, and excavation.
  • Move earth on moderate slopes, graded curves, and shoulders, rocky or soft ground, hilly forest, and other surfaces with similar rough features.
  • Operate engineering equipment on flat and rolling terrain to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth, including roads to exact specifications.
  • Follow established safety procedures to avoid injury and damage equipment or property.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) (or higher) [with Hazardous Materials and Tanker endorsements and no Air Brake Restriction].
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You will be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month.
Qualifications
  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT).
  • Ability to drive safely (Motor Vehicles).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation).
  • Ability to operate safely (Non-Motor Vehicle).
  • Operation of Motor Vehicles.
  • Reliability and dependability as an Engineer Equipment Operator.
  • Work Practices (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order).
Additional Requirements
  • Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Hazardous Materials and Tanker endorsements, by the initial or subsequent cut-off date (based on receipt of application).
