Overview

Responsibilities

Recognized among the Best Hospitals in Washington state by U.S. News & World Report, Virginia Mason Medical Center is seeking an ICU Nurse for our Level 1 Stroke and Cardiac Center. In this role, you will be responsible for monitoring patients with the highest acuity levels following severe injuries, surgeries, or critical illnesses.

As part of our 28-bed Intensive Care Unit, your overall responsibilities will include:

  • Managing complex patients requiring open heart and neurological surgeries, as well as interventional treatments for neuro and cardiac conditions.
  • Providing support for vascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and ventilator-dependent patients, including the use of mechanical circulatory support devices such as IABP, Impella, ECMO, and CRRT.
  • Assessing, planning, and implementing nursing care while prioritizing patient comfort.
  • Anticipating and addressing the informational and emotional needs of patients and their families.
  • Guiding and directing healthcare personnel, including Patient Care Technicians, in delivering patient care.
  • Maintaining proficiency in the setup, maintenance, and operation of medical equipment (e.g., IV pumps, monitoring devices, drainage systems).

Utilizing safeguards such as IV pump drug libraries and monitor alarms is essential, as is initiating emergency support measures when necessary, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and protecting patients from harm.

Each shift will begin with a brief team huddle, where you will receive a report from the outgoing shift. You will continue care and perform procedures as outlined in the care plan, which may involve assisting physicians with chest tubes or central lines, providing wound care, ensuring patients receive imaging studies, or administering medications.

To excel in this position, you will need to demonstrate strong multitasking abilities and respond swiftly to various situations. You will provide clinical care to your patients, remaining focused and attentive as you continuously monitor their conditions throughout your shift. Acting as their advocate, you will support their best interests when they are unable to do so. Your sound judgment during critical moments will be key to your success.

Qualifications

To qualify for this role, you must possess a current RN license in Washington State. A minimum of two years of recent experience in Critical Care is preferred. EKG Monitor Validation and ACLS certification will be required within 90 days of hire. Additionally, graduation from an accredited nursing school approved by the Washington State Board of Nursing is necessary.

Please note that this position requires quarterly American Heart Association (AHA) Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) competency certification post-hire. This ongoing competency must be maintained through internal resources; external RQI competency resources are not acceptable for compliance with CommonSpirit Health requirements.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in Open Heart procedures, Interventional Cardiology, and device management, as well as CCRN certification, are highly desirable.

Virginia Mason offers more than just competitive compensation and benefits. With opportunities for continuing education and potential relocation assistance, we are committed to your well-being and professional growth.
