Cafeteria Worker

Job Summary:

The Substitute Food Service Associate is a vital member of the Albemarle County Public Schools team, responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of school cafeterias. This role requires a high level of flexibility, initiative, and customer service skills.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare and serve nutritional meals to students and staff
• Move food to preparation areas, prepare food for cooking and serving, and store food safely
• Clean work utensils, equipment, kitchen, and dining areas
• Operate a cash register and handle customer transactions
• Set up serving lines and ensure a positive customer experience
• Follow proper sanitation and safe food handling procedures
• Attend designated meetings and training classes
• Perform other duties as assigned by the manager and assistant manager

Requirements:

• Ability to work independently and demonstrate flexibility and initiative
• Excellent customer service skills and ability to work well in a team setting
• High school diploma or equivalent required; some knowledge of or experience in quantity food preparation desired

Working Conditions:

• Typically works in a school cafeteria setting with kitchen, serving line, and storage areas
• Extended periods of standing required; frequent bending and lifting of food containers, food, and pots weighing 1-30 pounds
• Occasional bending and lifting up to 45 pounds of items such as cases of food
• Occasional exposure to damp floors, steam from equipment, and potentially caustic cleaning materials
• Daily contact with principal, school staff, teachers, and students; occasional contact with visitors and the general public
