Each year, we rescue and rehabilitate nearly 4,000 homeless animals, while also offering vital safety net services to keep pets in loving homes.
We are currently seeking a full-time Licensed Veterinary Technician to join our team at the Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital, a comprehensive, low-cost facility serving the public. Our mission is to alleviate the financial barriers to veterinary care, ensuring that all pets receive the medical attention they need.
Key Responsibilities- Manage and monitor controlled substances for patients.
- Maintain accurate and timely medical records.
- Prepare and oversee surgical patients, including pre-medication and monitoring.
- Respond effectively to emergencies, following the guidance of veterinarians.
- Deliver exceptional care to surgical and hospitalized animals, as well as outpatients.
- Communicate compassionately and clearly with pet owners.
- Support the veterinary team in managing hospital operations.
- Perform all duties of a veterinary assistant as needed.
- Participate in ongoing training and meetings.
- Recognize when assistance is required and seek help accordingly.
- Complete other related tasks as assigned.
- Strong customer service and empathetic communication skills.
- Experience handling both dogs and cats, including those with behavioral challenges.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Availability for weekday shifts; weekend work is not required.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Reliable transportation is essential.
- Current LVT license in good standing in Virginia is required.
- Professional communication abilities and comfort in engaging with colleagues.
- Capacity to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
- Commitment to the health and wellbeing of all patients.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Resourceful and positive attitude.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Proficient in computer skills, with a willingness to learn new systems.
- Prior experience in a veterinary clinic or high-volume animal care setting is advantageous.
- Knowledge of basic veterinary practices and procedures.
- Experience with dental treatments is preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly.
- Capable of pushing and pulling heavy equipment.
- Comfortable working in environments with animals, loud noises, and various chemicals.
- Ability to bend, kneel, and perform repetitive motions.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods.
- Fast-paced setting with potential exposure to hazards.
- High noise levels.
- Risk of animal bites, scratches, and zoonotic diseases.
