Job Overview

Position Title: Equipment Operator

Department: Facilities Maintenance

Classification: Non-Exempt

Compensation: Starting at $16.66 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY

The Equipment Operator is responsible for operating various machinery to assist in construction and maintenance tasks within the facilities department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Utilizes a boom mower or tractor equipped with a bush-hog for mowing and clearing vegetation.
  • Operates backhoes, trackhoes, and mini-excavators for excavation and land clearing.
  • Employs hand and power tools for tasks such as land clearing and brush removal.
  • Collects and disposes of debris from work sites.
  • Installs, maintains, and cleans culverts.
  • Repairs potholes and other surface issues.
  • Conducts traffic control and flagging as necessary.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment, including greasing and blade changes.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Completes other tasks as assigned by supervisory personnel.
  • In emergencies, may be required to undertake alternative duties as directed.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Familiarity with equipment and materials used in facilities maintenance.
  • Understanding of safety regulations and procedures.

  • Proficiency in operating vehicles and machinery.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Competence in using hand and power tools.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

SUPERVISION

Work is assigned by a supervisor who provides general instructions. Completed tasks are reviewed for adherence to guidelines and quality standards.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include safety protocols, traffic regulations, and departmental policies. While generally clear, some guidelines may require interpretation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work is performed in various positions, including sitting, standing, and bending. The role involves lifting both light and heavy objects and may require climbing.
  • Outdoor work may expose the employee to varying weather conditions, dust, and machinery hazards. Protective equipment such as masks and gloves may be necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic math functions at a high school level or equivalent.
  • Experience in a similar role or completion of relevant training programs.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license appropriate for the equipment operated.
