Job Summary

The Great Plains Zoo is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Zookeeper to join our team. As a key member of our animal care staff, you will be responsible for the daily care and well-being of our primate, birds, and herpetology species.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional animal care, including feeding, enclosure maintenance, behavioral observation, training, enrichment, and health care maintenance/treatments.
  • Maintain exhibits and holding areas in a clean, aesthetically pleasing, and presentable condition at all times.
  • Observe the animal collection for any signs of illness, lethargy, injury, or dietary problems and report any issues to the Veterinarian, Area Supervisor, and/or Animal Care Director.
  • Assist the Veterinarian, Area Supervisor, and/or Animal Care Director in routine animal examinations and medicate animals with any prescribed treatments.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and interact and communicate well with the general public.
  • Maintain daily reports, medical records, enrichment logs, and other records as needed in the assigned area.
  • Give presentations to guests on a regular basis and answer questions about animals and exhibits.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, or a related field.
  • Previous animal training and/or Zookeeper experience preferred.
  • Experience in an AZA accredited facility is a plus.
  • Certified or able to become certified in CPR/AED within 1 year of employment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass a pre-employment background check.

Work Environment:

The Great Plains Zoo is a dynamic and fast-paced work environment. As a Zookeeper, you will be exposed to various weather conditions, strong odors, and potentially hazardous materials. You must be able to climb ladders, lift crates/animals and equipment, and work in a team environment.
