Job Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) acts as a caregiver to residents during their scheduled shifts in long-term care settings. This role involves delivering resident-centered nursing care and assisting with daily living activities under the guidance of a registered nurse (RN).
Possessing knowledge of age-appropriate care, the NA addresses both the physical and psychological needs of residents according to their care plans.
As a vital member of the nursing team, the NA is responsible for adhering to infection prevention protocols and utilizing Personal Protective Equipment as required.
Responsibilities include assisting with essential health care needs, which may encompass bathing, grooming, dressing, recording vital signs, and providing emotional support and personal care to assigned residents.
The NA also aids residents in mobility, including transferring and repositioning, while employing proper techniques and equipment, and may facilitate range of motion exercises.
The NA contributes to meal preparation and dining experiences, ensuring a positive atmosphere for residents during meals and snacks, and providing hydration and nutritional supplements as needed.The NA supports nursing staff with procedures when necessary, documents resident interactions and care outcomes, and communicates any changes in residents' conditions to the charge nurse. Responsibilities also include collecting non-invasive body fluid specimens and vital signs, as well as maintaining cleanliness in residents' living areas through housekeeping and laundry services. The NA may assist with wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation, and may engage in departmental committees as required.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not mandatory.
Minimum age requirement is 16. Previous experience in long-term care as a clinical or nursing assistant is advantageous.
Certification as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) is required, with certification from the State Board of Nursing or enrollment in a training program to obtain certification within four months of starting the position.
Training and certification will be provided by the facility.Annual completion of department-specific competency testing and maintenance of continuing education credits is required, with a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education annually. All necessary certifications must be kept up to date.
In applicable states, certification and registration with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry may be required.
Depending on the facility's needs, this position may require a valid driver's license and a motor vehicle report, as well as medical qualifications to perform essential driving functions as per organizational policies.
