Job Summary:

The Surgical Technologist Certified will function under the direction of the registered professional nurse, assisting the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care. This role requires knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases.

Responsibilities:
  • Assists the healthcare team in preparing the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment.
  • Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures, including review and utilization of appropriate preference cards.
  • Assists with room set-up, including opening of sterile supplies, and sets up sterile tables with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication/solutions needed for procedures.
  • Performs surgical counts with the circulator and actively participates in the procedure pause/time-out.
  • Scrubs, gowns, and gloves; gowns and gloves the surgeon and assistants.
  • Assists in draping the sterile field and passes instruments to the surgeon during procedures.
  • Maintains an organized back table and operative field, anticipating and offering suggestions to the surgeon throughout the procedure.
  • Prepares sterile dressings and actively participates in post-procedure pauses, including accounting for proper handling of specimens.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization, taking initiative to inform SPD of critical need instruments.
  • Applies principles of asepsis to ensure the prevention of infection and safety of patients and employees.
  • Prepares case carts according to procedure and preference cards, reviewing surgical schedules and assisting clinical coordinators with preparation for future cases.
  • Observes patient conditions and immediately reports any changes or significant findings to the physician and Registered Nurse.
  • Proactively plans for the next steps in the progression of procedures as needed, demonstrating an ability to adjust without faltering when an emergency arises.
Requirements:
  • Graduate of an accredited program in surgical technology or licensed practical nurse.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with other healthcare providers in the provision of patient care.
  • Ability to delegate to other team members as required.
  • Ability to multi-task and function in stressful and emergency situations.
  • Strong detail orientation and knowledge of surgical procedures.
  • Basic computer skills, including Word and Excel.
  • Skill and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Skill and ability to handle multiple priorities, self-direct, and apply independent judgment.
  • Ability to think critically and adapt quickly to changing situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • National certification as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • BLS Instructor certification.
  • BLS Provisional certification.
