Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Surgical Circulation Professional to join our team at TSAOG Orthopaedics & Spine. This is a part-time position that offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic and community-focused multi-specialty physician group.

Job Description

The Surgical Circulation Professional will be responsible for providing direct patient care and other nursing services to patients and their families/significant others by applying and documenting the nursing process; assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation.

  • Assists in setting up and performance of cases by assembly of equipment and supplies according to physician preference cards.
  • Assists in setting up and performance of cases by opening of sterile pack, instruments and supplies according to sterile technique.
  • Assists in preparation of the sterile field including sponge, needle and instrument counts.
  • Acts as scrub nurse or assistant to surgeon as directed, maintaining integrity of sterile field.
  • Acts a circulating nurse in preparing patient for surgery, positioning patient in appropriate position, and moving patient to and from operating table: other duties as directed by Board Runner.
  • Handles specimens according to proper procedure.
  • Assists in clean up of operating room following surgery, including proper disposal of used supplies and sharps, cleaning and decontamination of instruments, equipment and operating room.
  • Demonstrates understanding and utilization of principles of asepsis in all duties.
  • Accepts and conscientiously applies emergency call procedures.
  • Responsible for complete and thorough performance of assigned tasks, addressing specific needs of pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients as necessary.
  • Provides nursing care for patients undergoing operative procedures.
  • Performs the perioperative nursing role to include preoperative assessment of the patient, nursing care plan formulation, operative care plan implementation and postoperative evaluation of the patients response/outcome and of effectiveness and appropriateness of nursing care provided.
  • Assumes responsibility for intra-operative patient safety related to positioning activities, the use of equipment and use of chemicals and solutions.
  • Performs surgical counts (sponges, sharps and instruments) and documents nursing care on the legal records.
  • Performs infection control activities to include observation of the surgical team during procedures, taking corrective actions PRN to maintain aseptic technique.
  • Provides a surgically clean environment for patient care. Ensures the sterility of supplies and instrumentation used during operative procedures.
  • Performs as team leader, directing the activities of professionals and coordinating efforts with the other professional staff members. Assures the proper supplies, equipment and instrumentation are available for surgical procedures. Assures accurate, timely disposition of specimens, cultures and blood/blood products with accompanying record keeping.
  • Assumes responsibility for coordination of a surgical service, updating surgeons preference cards and instrument lists, in-servicing new procedures and equipment and teaching newly assigned personnel rotating through the surgical service.
  • Assists anesthesia personnel with the intubation/extubation of patients, the monitoring of fluid/volume balance, administration of blood/blood products and the thermo regulation of the patient.
  • Monitor patient level of consciousness, electrocardiogram, and BP during local anesthetic procedures. Administers medication per physicians orders.
  • Responsible for narcotics count during these procedures.
  • Actively participates in OR CQI program by conducting monitoring of patient care activities and following through steps to problem solve.
  • Acts as the nursing advocate for the patient, upholding the patients rights.
  • Collaborates with other professional team members.
  • Is fully knowledgeable of policies and procedures of the dept. of surgical services.
  • Assumes the duties of the supervisor in their absence.
