Job Summary

As a Phlebotomist at CAMC Health System, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accurate and timely collection of blood and other specimens for laboratory testing. This is a dynamic and challenging position that requires strong communication and technical skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collections according to established procedures and policies.
  • Screen and enter patient data into laboratory computer systems.
  • Collect, label, process, and distribute specimens to appropriate laboratory sections.
  • Access laboratory computer programs, including specimen tracking.
  • Process, deliver, and prepare laboratory specimens for analysis or transport.
  • Provide instruction to outpatients on proper collection techniques.
  • Enter patient information into computer systems, utilizing lab test codes and patient location codes.
  • Generate specimen collection lists for the laboratory.
  • Read and carry out physician's orders.
  • Communicate with nursing units and physicians to ensure proper laboratory tests are ordered.
  • Take corrective action for improperly ordered laboratory tests.
  • Recognize and correct problems according to prescribed phlebotomy protocols.
  • Participate in quality assurance studies and PI/QM meetings.
  • Document customer, visitor, and patient concerns.
  • Communicate reports to personnel via phone or fax.
  • Document and take corrective action for improperly labeled and submitted specimens.
  • Access information from HIS, maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Perform point of care testing under the supervision of a Certified Phlebotomist or Medical Lab Scientist.
  • Ensure cleanliness of working materials and equipment.
  • Answer phone calls and route them to appropriate personnel.
  • Record messages and handle requests as necessary.
  • Pick up and deliver mail as appropriate.
  • Operate the pneumatic tube system properly.
  • Perform basic printer operations and maintenance.
  • Participate in Massive Operative Bleed protocol for the O.R.
  • Participate in Trauma Priority I and Trauma Priority II notifications.
  • Collect and deliver specimens as indicated for CODE 1-2-3.
  • Perform proper collection techniques for sweat chloride testing.
  • Take a limited role as a preceptor for new hires and students.
  • Participate in retaining and obtaining knowledge and skills through continuing education.
  • Read and interpret physicians' orders for lab testing on outpatients.
  • Maintain adequate phlebotomy supplies inventory in the department and nursing units.
  • Obtain documentation and release specimens to Medical Examiners' office, eye bank, and C.O.R.E.
  • Obtain documentation and release bodies to funeral home or Medical Examiner's office as appropriate.
  • Perform basic lab procedures, including determining urine volumes and simple reagent preparation.
  • Maintain Laboratory Phlebotomist Competency Validation.
  • Collect throat swabs and nasopharyngeal swabs for culture as indicated.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Formalized training in phlebotomy.
  • 80 clinical hours with a minimum performance of 100 successful unaided blood collections.
  • Orientation in a full-service laboratory.
  • 40 clock hours of didactic training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Point of Care Tech certification.
