Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Solid Waste Operator to join our team at the City of Lansing, MI. As a key member of our Public Service Department, you will be responsible for assisting with the daily operations of our waste management services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate a motorized vehicle up to 35 feet in length, of either the recycle or refuse packer model, while standing inside the driver's cab.
  • Pick up refuse bags and bundles of yard waste and deposit materials in the side of the vehicle.
  • Pick up City recycle carts and empty them in the side of the packer.
  • Pick up City refuse carts and empty them in the side of the packer.
  • May operate a bulk item collection truck which requires the ability to lift and move furniture, appliances and other large items.
  • Wash and clean vehicles daily, inside and out.
  • Participate in a preventative maintenance program by maintaining packers and other solid waste vehicles.
  • Complete daily log, trip and inspection sheets by recording hand-written information regarding work activities.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of experience performing heavy manual labor tasks.
  • One (1) year of experience operating a packer truck preferred.
  • Valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License, Group B, with Air Brakes.
  • MDOT Drug & Alcohol Training.
  • Ability to pass the Solid Waste training program within forty-five (45) days.
