Fleet Maintenance Crew Leader Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Fleet Maintenance Crew Leader to join our team at the City of Huntington Beach, CA. As a key member of our Public Works Department, you will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing the maintenance and repair of our fleet vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the work of skilled employees in the maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles and equipment
  • Schedule and plan the operations of the crews and coordinate projects; maintain inspection and repair records; oversee all work in progress to ensure quality, timeliness, and safety
  • Evaluate work projects to assess staffing, equipment, and time requirements; prepare action formats to complete assignments in accordance with directed priorities; inspect completed work for compliance with established standards and other requirements before releasing vehicles or equipment into service
  • Perform a variety of operations, research, and analytical duties in support of fleet operations activities; provide input during the budget process and monitor the operating budget for the area of responsibility
  • Assist fleet operations staff with the creation of vehicle/equipment repair orders; provide scheduled and overdue preventative maintenance work lists and reports for all fleet vehicles/equipment; monitor repair records to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Monitor and oversee the operational status and inventory levels of the multiple fleets' parts and supplies room; initiate purchase orders and fund transfers between accounts or purchase orders as necessary
  • Receive new equipment, participate in new vehicle preparation, and enter new equipment into fleet and fuel management systems
  • Maintain the automated fuel system; create and assign employee PIN numbers; equipment numbers, and other information necessary for fuel tracking
  • Assist with interviewing and training of employees, assign and evaluate work; conduct performance appraisals
  • Coordinate repair work with outside vendors
  • Ensure compliance with occupational safety, hazard, and related programs, policies, and procedures
  • Generate fleet management reports using available report programs in fleet and fuel management systems along with standard report writing programs
  • Support and actively promote the City's safety programs by providing instruction, training, and receiving new and updated regulations and material
  • Perform periodic safety inspections; identify and correct safety hazards
  • Assist or participate in repair or field work as necessary; respond to emergency calls for service on a call-out basis
  • Attend daily briefings, safety meetings, meetings with supervisor and/or coworkers, training sessions, and other meetings or training related to areas of assignment
  • Remain current on all city policies and procedures affecting duties performed and follow established policies and procedures
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate
  • Five (5) years' automotive, diesel, and heavy equipment or specialized equipment maintenance and repair, fleet management, or inventory control experience, including two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience
  • Valid California Class A or Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record required by time of appointment and during the course of employment
  • Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in the following: C1 - Automobile Service Consultant, T1 - Gasoline Engines, T2 - Diesel Engines, T4 - Brakes, T5 - Suspension and Steering, T8 - Preventive Maintenance Inspection
