Since our inception in 1970, we have been at the forefront of supporting Hawai'i's youth, offering a range of services including outreach programs, independent living support, therapeutic foster care, and safe havens for those in crisis.
Role Summary
We are seeking Relief Youth Counselors to engage with adolescents aged 12 to 17 who are in crisis and temporarily residing in our emergency shelter. The duration of their stay can vary from a single day to several weeks as they await more stable placements.
In this role, you will be responsible for effectively managing crisis situations and guiding youth through their challenges. It is essential to create a secure, structured, and nurturing atmosphere that encourages participation in daily routines, including chores, meals, and planned activities. Engaging in meaningful conversations with the youth to support their emotional development and promote positive coping strategies is a key aspect of this position. Additionally, you will conduct regular safety checks and assist youth in starting their day positively.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage intake processes and maintain accurate documentation.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure effective communication and support.
- Represent Hale Kipa professionally when interacting with youth, families, and external partners.
Work Schedule
This position is on-call, with shifts varying based on availability. Potential shifts include:
- Day Shift: Monday - Friday 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM
- Weekend & Swing Shifts: Saturday & Sunday 8:45 AM - 10:30 PM; Monday - Friday 2:30 PM - 10:30 PM
- Overnight Awake Shift: Sunday - Thursday 10:00 PM - 8:00 AM; Friday & Saturday 10:00 PM - 9:00 AM
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Preferred: 2+ years of experience or training working with at-risk youth.
- Experience with youth affected by trauma, including those involved in sex trafficking, is highly preferred.
Requirements
- Valid driver's license and ability to transport youth as needed.
Compensation
- Hourly Rate: $20.00
- Retention Bonus: $500 after one year of employment.
