Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) to join our Orthopedic Team at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. As an APN, you will provide high-quality patient care, work collaboratively with our multidisciplinary team, and contribute to the development of our orthopedic services.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care to our Veterans, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of orthopedic conditions.
  • Participate in clinics, including postoperative and other patients as needed.
  • Complete patient assessments, including history and physical exams, and order diagnostic tests as indicated.
  • Support the Advanced Clinic Access (ACA) principles to improve clinic flow, reduce the number of visits per unique patient, and improve patient wait times.
  • Provide continuity of patient care between the outpatient and inpatient venues.
  • Perform initial evaluations of consults in the ER, ICU, and inpatient units when residents are in the operating room or at a conference.
  • Assist in the daily management of the inpatient floors when residents are not available and work collaboratively with the floor nurses.
  • Prescribe medications, diet, supplies, prosthetic devices, and home health aids according to clinical privileges.
  • Coordinate special order items and off-station testing as needed.
  • Teach and counsel patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, plan of care, and intervene with optimal treatment for patients and families.
  • Participate on interdisciplinary councils, task forces, and committees as assigned.
  • Participate in the selection and development of patient education materials.
  • Advance clinical knowledge of self and others by presenting relevant information and continuing education programs for nursing and medical staff.
  • Participate in clinical research relevant to the Orthopedic patient population.
  • Assist in the collection of data and implementing system changes.
  • Perform limited numbers of orthopedic procedures commensurate with experience and privileging when onboarded or at a later date, as appropriate.
  • Assist in the operating room for selected procedures aligned with clinic needs, experience, and privileging when onboarded or at a later date.
Requirements
  • Current APN license to practice as an NP in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Basic Certification from a nationally recognized certifying body in the area of clinical specialty.
  • One year of specialized APN experience equivalent to the Nurse II grade level.
  • Leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex client care.
  • Ability to work effectively as a leader within a team/unit/group and seek interdisciplinary collaboration as appropriate to enhance patient care.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge and skills to develop expertise in area of practice.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills and professional behavior, promoting cooperation and teamwork.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current or previous experience with managing orthopedic outpatient and inpatients.
  • Experience with joint injections.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
