DIVISION: Machine Shop

ROLE SUMMARY:
Responsible for setting up and operating CNC and manual machinery, either independently or in conjunction with other machines. The role demands precision work to specified tolerances utilizing established methods and practices. Regular inspection and documentation of results are required. The position also involves maintaining tooling to minimize production interruptions and collaborating with manufacturing teams to enhance production capabilities. Minor preventative maintenance tasks are also part of the responsibilities. The machinist may work as part of a team or independently, and is expected to perform additional duties as necessary, demonstrating efficiency with minimal nonconforming parts.

DECISION-MAKING AND COMPLEXITY:
This role requires skill and sound judgment in operating CNC and manual equipment, as well as in setting up and laying out work. Responsibilities include calculating and adjusting machine offsets and verifying parts for compliance. The machinist may need to adapt or modify methods, CNC programs, or setups after consulting with a supervisor as needed. Maintaining a safe and organized workstation is essential, along with completing tasks effectively and in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to interpret completed drawings, job layouts, and specifications. Proficiency in using various precision measuring instruments and applying shop mathematics with decimal dimensions is required. Comprehensive training in basic machining operations is necessary, along with familiarity with NC/CNC machine operations across a range of machines. Understanding the cutting characteristics of different metals is also important. A high school diploma or equivalent, combined with 1-2 years of shop training, is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of one to two years of experience operating manual or NC/CNC machinery (including lathes, boring mills, machining centers, etc.) is required.

INITIATIVE:
The machinist should be capable of working with minimal supervision, both individually and as part of a team. Effective communication of problems and solutions to manufacturing personnel is essential. The ability to make decisions within the framework of general procedures and practices is expected, along with proactively seeking the next assignment and transitioning to the appropriate machine.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position involves standing for extended periods and operating one or multiple machines. It may require frequent lifting and handling of medium castings, with chain hoists available for heavier items. Some heavy lifting and pushing/pulling may be necessary, and certain tasks may need to be performed in awkward positions. Employees in this role are expected to frequently walk and hear, and must use their hands to manipulate objects, tools, or controls. The ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds is required. Specific vision capabilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work conditions may be extremely noisy, with exposure to dust, flying chips, heat, and some fumes. There may also be exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
