The Phlebotomy Specialist performs venipuncture procedures for clinical or medical testing and transfusions. This role requires the ability to procure blood samples from patients and label them accurately to preserve the integrity of specimens for proper transporting, processing, and preparation of all samples. The Specialist will review lab requisitions and perform quality review and troubleshooting. Additionally, they will ensure adequate supplies and inventory, and perform all clerical functions including data entry, maintaining records, answering phones, and providing reports. The Phlebotomy Specialist will provide support and facilitate communications by effectively navigating computer and phone systems, building and maintaining customer relationships, and providing a positive, professional, and empathetic understanding to all customers.
Responsibilities- Identify patients, observe the correct procedure for venipuncture, collect and label specimens exactly as outlined in each medical requisition.
- Accurately print collection batch and labels for phlebotomy collections.
- Adhere to infection control standards, properly handle each specimen, and ensure that every specimen is delivered to the laboratory in a timely manner per laboratory protocol.
- Accurately process specimens for send-out according to appropriate procedures, ensuring timely processing, and participate in departmental process improvement.
- Adhere to turnaround time (TAT) guidelines for STAT and routine tests.
- Ensure HIPAA compliance and regulatory standards.
- Empathize with patients and patient support systems, express compassion and understanding for the situation, and demonstrate care appropriate for the age, cultural, religious, gender identity, or ethnic background.
- Engage in caring behaviors, taking conscious ownership for work, and take deliberate/thoughtful actions regarding how to best carry out interactions with patients, families, physicians, and co-workers.
- Receive and handle calls, document issues, and escalate to Lead/Supervisor as appropriate.
- Manage supplies, including inventory, ordering, receiving, and stocking.
- Deliver lab supplies as appropriate.
- Pick-up and deliver all laboratory samples/specimens to the departments for testing as appropriate.
- Print and deliver/fax lab reports in a timely manner.
- California Certified Phlebotomy Technician
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
- Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
- Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Los Angeles City Employees only)
- Experience with lab/hospital computer systems and software
- Applicable clinical lab work experience
- Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families
