Gas Utility System Technician

This position plays a crucial role in maintaining and repairing the natural gas utility system, ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of services to the community.
Key Responsibilities- Stock and maintain inventory of parts, materials, and tools for gas utility system maintenance and repair.
- Locate and mark underground gas lines, exposing them to identify potential hazards or obstructions.
- Operate heavy and light equipment, including backhoes, dump trucks, and loaders, to excavate work sites and perform manual labor.
- Perform manual labor using rakes, shovels, post hole diggers, pipe locators, and heat fusion machines.
- Backfill, compact, and cold patch holes and trenches.
- Remove brush and trees from rights-of-way.
- Assist with pipeline construction, fitting, and maintenance, including installing plastic and steel pipelines and making tap connections.
- Assist in constructing and installing gas pressure regulation and meter stations.
- Install new gas services.
- Respond to emergency situations and locate and repair gas leaks.
- Repair broken or damaged pipelines.
- Paint meter stations.
- Knowledge of department safety policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of gas utility system maintenance and repair principles.
- Knowledge of area streets and roads.
- Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance principles.
- Skill in operating assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in using hand and power tools and specialized gas utility maintenance and repair equipment.
- Skill in problem-solving.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
The City of Lawrenceville offers a comprehensive benefits package to full-time employees, including health care, dental, vision, retirement, deferred compensation plans, health savings accounts, life insurance, long-term disability, short-term disability, holidays, and personal time off.
Health insurance benefits become active on the 31st day of employment, with three options: PPO - Options A & B with HRA, HDP with HSA, and HSA with City-funded contributions.
Retirement plans include Defined Contribution (401a) and Deferred Compensation (457b), with a 4% City contribution to the 401a plan and a 6% City contribution to the 457b plan for employees who contribute at least 4%.
Short-term disability, long-term disability, accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D), and life insurance are also provided, with the option to purchase supplemental life insurance for self, spouse, and children.
Personal time off is earned at a rate of 3.692 hours per pay period for the first year, increasing to 11.076 hours per pay period for employees with over 15 years of service.
Tuition reimbursement is available for associate's, bachelor's, or master's degrees, with eligibility after one year of employment.
