About the Job

The Building Maintenance Technician is a key member of the Facilities department at Vanderbilt University, responsible for the ongoing maintenance and repair of buildings and areas. This role requires a strong knowledge of building skills, including HVAC, plumbing, drywall installation, painting, and general building repair.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on buildings and equipment
  • Check and maintain HVAC systems, including chilled water pressure and steam pressure
  • Investigate and repair water leaks
  • Change air filters and grease pumps/motor bearings
  • Check and prime AC drain traps
  • Assist with condensate pump system repairs and clean AHU coils/air intakes
  • Change out thermostats and check discharge air temps on HVAC equipment
  • Clean and organize work areas, including mechanical/electrical rooms' parts storage areas
  • Perform minor plumbing repairs and replace ceiling tile, rubber base, and carpet
  • Hang pictures, bulletin boards, and dry erase/chalk boards
  • Cut and install small drywall pieces/mud and patch holes and nail holes
  • Assist with laying ceramic floor tile and grouting
  • Respond to roof leak calls and locate leaks
  • Change out/install door sweeps and install/replace door stops
  • Repair tracks on sliding doors and minor dorm furniture repairs
  • Assist with assembling trash cans/benches and setting them
  • Repair brackets for wall shelving and replace lamps and ballasts in fixtures
  • Replace/upgrade fixtures and replace receptacles and switches
  • Reset small amperage circuit breakers and properly handle/dispose of lamps and ballasts
  • Organize bulb supply and spent bulb storage locations
  • Use Volt-Ohm Meter to check voltage/current and operate vehicle/golf cart and perform operator level maintenance
Requirements
  • High School Graduate or GED required
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Ability to work safely around equipment
  • Strong communication skills and ability to effectively communicate and follow written and oral instructions
  • Able to stand, stoop, crawl, work on elevated surfaces, and be in awkward positions for extended periods of time
  • Push, pull, lift, and carry at least 50 pounds
  • Able to work in various weather conditions
