Linguistic Expert

We are seeking a highly skilled Linguistic Expert to join our team at Actalent. As a Linguistic Expert, you will play a critical role in advancing our engineering and science initiatives through your expertise in linguistics and natural language processing.

• Perform linguistic analyses on large datasets to identify patterns and trends.
• Conduct linguistic error analysis of AI model outputs to determine the most frequent and severe error categories.
• Develop and maintain guidelines for human annotation and translation projects.
• Conduct typological and sociolinguistic research on a large number of languages to highlight their similarities and differences.
• Perform linguistic analyses for Responsible AI to identify toxic language, hate speech, gender bias, and other cultural biases in massively multilingual settings.
• Conduct linguistic literature reviews on various NLP-adjacent topics and summarize findings.
• Compare the quality of human translations between vendors, identify error patterns, and provide actionable feedback.
• Provide information or guidance relative to any aspect of linguistic knowledge, including typology, morpho-syntax, sociolinguistics, classification, phonetics/phonology, pragmatics, and more.
• Collaborate with native speakers in various languages to ensure accurate and culturally sensitive results.
• Communicate results of linguistic analyses to engineers and research scientists.

• Strong written and spoken communication skills, with a focus on business and research communication.
• Native or near-native proficiency in a language other than English, with a preference for languages from the Afro-Asiatic or Atlantic-Congo family.
• Working knowledge of other languages is a plus, with a focus on proficiency in low-resource languages.
• Ability to code in Python and query databases using SQL, with experience in other coding languages used for data analysis (e.g., R) a plus.
• Graduate degree in Linguistics or a related field is required, with a PhD a plus.
• Firm grasp of linguistic fields such as language typology, syntax, morphology, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, writing systems, pragmatics, and phonology.
• Experience applying basic Natural Language Processing techniques and collaborating with machine learning, NLP, or software engineers, or data scientists.
• Experience contributing to research papers and working cross-functionally.
